SOLID FIBREGLASS CORE
Built to withstand the toughest jobs, ROUGHNECK® pick axes and mattocks are manufactured from drop forged steel, heat treated for extra toughness, and mounted on a solid fibreglass core handle.
Our solid fibreglass core handles are not only stronger than conventional wooden handles, they are also far more durable and require no maintenance.
They feature a soft, non-slip rubber grip for improved comfort, safety and control. In addition to being lighter and stronger than wood, they also transfer less strike shock and vibration.
SIZE
ROUGHNECK® pick axes and mattocks are versatile tools with a wide variety of applications including digging up rocks and tree roots, breaking up and cultivating ground, preparing foundations and mortar removal. They are available in different weights and sizes to suit various applications.
STANDARD
Standard sized pick axes and mattocks weigh between 2.3kg/5lbs and 3.2kg/7lbs, and are mounted on a long 900mm/36" solid fibreglass core handle. They generate significant striking force and are therefore best suited to heavier work.
MICRO
Micro mattocks weigh 400g/14oz and are mounted on a 380mm/15" handle. They allow for more controlled, precise strikes, thereby preventing accidental damage to vulnerable objects such as pipes, cabling and plants. They are also ideal for working in tight access area.
BLADE TYPES
MATTOCK (ADZE) BLADE
The wide, horizontal mattock blade is slightly curved to ensure the optimum striking angle for greater penetration.
AXE BLADE
The vertical axe blade is shorter and thicker ensuring the strength needed for chopping through roots.
PICK
The pick can be in the form of a chisel or a point with the point being superior in breaking up hard materials as it concentrates striking force on a very small area.
HEAD FORM
CUTTER MATTOCK
Combines the functions of a horizontal mattock blades and a vertical axe blade. Ideal for cultivating soft ground, breaking up root infested ground, removing tree stumps, and clearing soil from around buried structures.
PICK MATTOCK
Combines the functions of a horizontal mattock blade and a point pick. Ideal for digging in and breaking up both soft and hard ground and dislodging stones and mortar.
PICK AXE
Combines both a chisel and point pick. Ideal for breaking up and dislodging rocks, stones, mortar, paving slabs, and hard or compacted ground. Can also be used for light prying.
